Volkswagen launched the Tayron
R-Line in India on February 19
2026 at ₹46.99 lakh making it
the brand’s new flagship SUV
and the most technologically
advanced 7 seater under ₹50
lakh. It replaces the Tiguan
AllSpace and directly challenges
the Toyota Fortuner with German
engineering premium technology
and AWD capability. Here is
our complete review.
What Is The Tayron
The Tayron is positioned above
the Taigun and below the Touareg
in Volkswagen’s global SUV lineup.
It is built on the MQB Evo
platform with a 2789mm wheelbase
and 4792mm length — significantly
larger than the Taigun. With
7 seats AWD 2.0 litre TSI engine
and Level 2 ADAS it offers
everything the Tiguan AllSpace
promised but with significantly
more technology and a more
premium interior.
Design — R-Line Sportiness
The R-Line trim adds high gloss
black accents an illuminated
VW logo light bar spanning
the full front width IQ Light
LED matrix headlights and
bespoke 19 inch alloy wheels.
The design is distinctly more
sporty and contemporary than
the Fortuner’s traditional
upright stance. Available
in classic Volkswagen colours
the Tayron looks premium and
modern on Indian roads.
Engine and Performance
The 2.0 litre TSI turbocharged
petrol engine produces 201bhp
and 320Nm — significantly
more powerful than any Indian
market petrol SUV rival in
its price range. Paired with
the 7 speed DSG dual clutch
automatic and 4Motion AWD
it achieves 0-100kmph in
7.3 seconds and a top speed
of 224kmph. Six driving modes
including Eco Comfort Sport
Snow and Off-Road allow
adapting the car to different
conditions.
Interior — 15 Inch Touchscreen
The Tayron’s cabin is the most
technologically advanced of
any 7 seater under ₹50 lakh
in India. The 12.9 inch floating
touchscreen running MIB4
software is the largest and
most sophisticated infotainment
of any car in its class. The
10.2 inch Digital Cockpit Pro
instrument display 30 colour
ambient lighting three zone
climate control panoramic
sunroof and premium leather
seats with integrated headrests
create a genuinely luxurious
cabin experience.
The second row gets sliding
and reclining seats creating
genuine legroom for adult
rear passengers — a rare
feature in this segment.
The Augmented Reality Heads
Up Display overlays navigation
information onto the real
road view.
Safety
9 airbags standard across
all variants is extraordinary
— more than any rival in
its segment. Level 2 ADAS
with adaptive cruise control
lane assist emergency braking
with pedestrian detection
and side assist 360 degree
camera and Volkswagen’s
comprehensive passive safety
make it the safest 7 seater
under ₹50 lakh in India.
7 Seats — The Reality
The third row is functional
for children and shorter
adults on shorter journeys.
Access to the third row is
somewhat tricky — the same
criticism that applied to
the Tiguan AllSpace. The
Tayron is best used as a
5 seater with the generous
second row benefiting adult
passengers on longer journeys.
Boot space with the third
row folded is a massive 850
litres — the largest of any
7 seater in its price range
making it genuinely practical
for family trips.
Honest Limitations
The suspension is firm —
especially in city driving
where large 19 inch wheels
and sport tuned setup transmit
road imperfections more than
softer rivals. Rear under
thigh support is not optimal
for taller adults. Heavy
reliance on the touchscreen
for basic functions can be
distracting while driving.
Tayron vs Toyota Fortuner
The Tayron wins on technology
interior quality performance
safety ratings and on road
driving dynamics. The Fortuner
wins on off road capability
ladder frame durability
resale value and Toyota’s
legendary long term reliability.
For urban and highway buyers
who spend 90 percent of time
on paved roads the Tayron
is the better choice. For
buyers who genuinely go off
road or want maximum resale
value the Fortuner remains
the answer.
Price and Value
At ₹46.99 lakh the Tayron
R-Line offers extraordinary
value for what it delivers.
9 airbags 201bhp AWD 7 seats
15 inch touchscreen and Level
2 ADAS at this price is
genuinely impressive. It is
₹12 lakh more than the entry
Fortuner but offers a
significantly more premium
experience in every measurable
parameter.
Verdict
The Volkswagen Tayron R-Line
is India’s most technologically
advanced 7 seater SUV under
₹50 lakh. If you want German
engineering maximum safety
technology and a genuinely
premium cabin experience
in a 7 seater the Tayron
is the obvious choice over
the Fortuner. If you want
proven long term reliability
and off road capability
the Fortuner remains the
benchmark.
