Tesla has finally arrived in India
and its first car is the Model Y
— the world’s best selling electric
vehicle. Launched in July 2025
and now expanded with the new
6 seater Model Y L the Tesla
lineup in India ranges from
₹59.89 lakh to ₹67.89 lakh.
Here is everything you need to
know about India’s most talked
about EV.
Why Tesla’s India Entry Matters
Tesla’s arrival in India is
the most significant event in
India’s EV history. The brand
that created the modern electric
vehicle revolution is now
officially available to Indian
buyers. While the price is
premium — a result of India’s
import duties on CBU vehicles
— Tesla brings its software
defined driving experience
Supercharger network and
legendary brand to India for
the first time.
The Model Y Lineup in India
Tesla offers the Model Y in
three variants in India. The
Premium RWD at ₹59.89 lakh
uses a 64kWh battery with
500km WLTP range and 299bhp.
The Long Range RWD at ₹67.89
lakh gets an 84.2kWh battery
with 661km WLTP range. The
new Model Y L at ₹61.99 lakh
is the 6 seater long wheelbase
AWD version with 88.2kWh
battery 681km WLTP range and
0-100kmph in 5 seconds.
Real world range in Indian
conditions is approximately
380 to 420km for the Premium
RWD and 500 to 550km for
the Long Range — honest and
usable figures for Indian buyers.
The Model Y L — 6 Seats and 681km
The newest addition launched
on April 22 2026 is the Model
Y L — a long wheelbase version
that is 179mm longer than
the standard model. The
2 plus 2 plus 2 six seat
layout with second row
captain seats makes it the
only premium 6 seater EV
available in India. Deliveries
begin June 2026.
Second row captain seats
with powered armrests
ventilation heating and
one touch folding make
rear passenger experience
genuinely premium. Third
row gets power recline
dedicated AC vents and
easy fold functionality.
An 18 speaker audio system
and adaptive suspension
complete a genuinely
impressive family EV package.
Design
The Model Y has Tesla’s
signature clean minimal
design with a full width
LED lightbar grille less
face flush door handles
and aerodynamic body.
The sloping roofline creates
a fastback SUV silhouette
that looks distinctive and
modern. Available in six
colours — Stealth Grey as
standard with Pearl White
Diamond Black Glacier Blue
Ultra Red and Cosmic Silver
available as paid options.
The Tesla Experience Inside
The cabin follows Tesla’s
minimalist philosophy centered
around a 16 inch central
touchscreen that controls
virtually every function.
There is no traditional
instrument cluster — speed
and navigation information
appear on the main screen.
Material quality is decent
though not as premium as
European rivals at this price
point.
The HEPA filtration system
is a genuine benefit in
India’s polluted cities —
removing fine particles from
cabin air significantly.
A 117 litre frunk plus 822
litre boot give it outstanding
total storage capacity.
Supercharger Network
Tesla currently operates
5 Supercharger stations in
India with 20 individual
chargers and 14 Wall
Connectors. Tesla plans
to add 7 more Supercharger
stations along major highways
connecting Delhi Chandigarh
Jaipur Ahmedabad Mumbai
Pune Bengaluru Hyderabad
and Chennai. The network
while small is growing —
and Tesla Superchargers
are consistently the fastest
and most reliable in India.
Full Self Driving — Not Yet Active
Tesla offers Full Self Driving
software for an additional
₹6 lakh but it is not yet
active in India due to
regulatory requirements.
Tesla’s hardware is ready
and FSD may be unlocked
via an over the air update
when regulations permit —
a future upgrade that no
other car in India offers.
Safety
The Model Y achieved 5 stars
in Euro NCAP crash testing.
9 airbags 360 degree camera
ADAS with autonomous emergency
braking lane departure avoidance
and blind spot monitoring
make it one of the safest
premium EVs available in India.
Honest Assessment
At ₹59.89 lakh the Tesla
Model Y is significantly
more expensive than rivals
like the BYD Sealion 7 at
₹49.40 lakh and Hyundai
Ioniq 5 at ₹55.70 lakh.
The price premium is entirely
a result of import duties —
in the USA the Model Y
costs approximately ₹42
lakh equivalent.
The limited service network
with outlets currently only
in Delhi Gurugram and Mumbai
is a genuine concern for
buyers elsewhere. Tesla’s
over the air update model
reduces service visits but
physical access remains
important.
Who Should Buy The Model Y
The Tesla Model Y is for
buyers who want the original
premium EV experience the
Tesla brand and the most
advanced over the air software
update capability of any car
in India. For buyers who
live in Delhi or Mumbai with
access to Superchargers and
service centres and want
something genuinely different
from the established options
the Model Y is the most
aspirational EV available
in India.
Verdict
The Tesla Model Y is not
the best value premium EV
in India — the BYD Sealion
7 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 offer
more for less. But it is
the most aspirational and
the most technologically
advanced EV in India. The
Tesla name the software
experience and the Supercharger
network give it a unique
appeal that no rival can
replicate. If budget is not
the primary concern the
Model Y is an extraordinary
first Tesla ownership
experience in India.
